Lot Description:Four Fine Old Lime Spatulas from the Massim and Sepik River Areas, Papua New Guinea
Including (from left to right in photo): A Fine Old Massim Clapper Type Lime Spatula used by chiefly persons when chewing Betel Nut Size 37cm on a custom stand; - Second from Left: This Old Spatula is likely from the Abelam Boiken or surrounding areas, I have never seen a similar example, the finial is an ancestor's head with a stylised bird on the front & back of where the body would have been. It is well used with old patina and I have had this spatula for a very long time. Size 43cm on a custom stand; Third from left: The finial is an animated Bird Figure from the Yuat River or Lower Sepik Area; the spatula handles a corrugated carving that made this also a percussion instrument when being moved back & forth into the lime gourd or bamboo. Size 41cm on a custom stand; Far Right is a Large Old Massim Lime Spatula that has finely incised spiral designs on both sides that has remanent of highlights of white lime and old use patina Size 48cm on a custom stand.
