Lot Description:A Fine Old Dayak Shield kliau, Borneo Island, Indonesia, Early to Mid-20th Century
The front of the shield is finely decorated a powerful face to frighten the opponents in battle. Fighting and war was an essential part of Dayak culture, who often, driven by belief in curses, marched for war against a neighbouring tribe. The Dayak believed that the paintings on the shields not only frightened their opponent but actually harmed them.
125 x 35 cm -
Provenance:The Todd Barlin Collection of Oceanic & Indonesian Art
-
Notes:Carved from a single piece of wood, the grip is located lengthwise in the centre of the shield. This particular shield has a very deep brown patina and traces of usage in battle. The design is faded from storing over a fire to keep insects away.
