  • Notes:
Netsuke are miniature, intricate sculptures with two holes through them designed as toggles to stop the cord on which personal items (notably tobacco accoutrement, the plant having been imported by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and inro, cases for seals and medicines) hang from the obi, the sash of a kimono. Initially conceived early in the Edo period (1615-1867), by the end of the 18th century nearly every male in Japan used them. Artisans set up workshops solely to produce netsuke, using rasps, drills, chisels, and lathes. They signed their work and developed different stylistic schools, based in Edo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Wakayama. During the Meiji period (1868-1912), when Western suits replaced the kimono, they evolved into objects d'art desired in both Japan and the West. Animals, domestic, wild, and mythical, are a major theme in netsuke carving. The Buddhist and Shinto love of nature, combined with careful observations of animals in the wild, created incredibly detailed and lifelike renderings. Six kataboro-style (literally, 'carving on all sides').
