Lot Description:CHANCERY OF THE ORDER OF ST MICHAEL & ST GEORGE: 1895 (Jul.5) 6pp notification document
of the appointment of Sir William Austin Zeal to the office of Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, signed by Queen Victoria “Victoria Re I” (Regina Imperatix) at the head of the two of the pages, beneath which are multicoloured ‘Auspicium Melioris Aevi’ seals and embossed wafer seals of the Order, the document twice countersigned by Sir Robert G.W. Herbert, and also countersigned by Colonial Secretary Sir Robert Henry Meade. -
Notes:Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert (1831-1905) was First Premier of Queensland (1859-1866) and the time of signing this document was serving in England as Agent-General for Tasmania (1893-96), having previously served as Permanent Under-Secretary for the Colonies (1871-92). Sir William Austin Zeal (1830-1912) was an engineer, businessman & politician. He was appointed Postmaster-General in 1892 during the Shiels ministry, resigning late that year, to then be elected President of the Legislative Assembly, a position he held until 1901.
