A Pair of Ancestral Figures, South Maluku, Indonesia
The head ornament carved on the statues indicates these figures are from Southeast Maluku. Items with this horn motif are known from Maluku Tenggara (the region between Babar and Timur) and also Tanimbar. This horn motif represents a killed animal, an important symbol of victory and status. Not only used in jewellery but also placed in certain houses to express the honour and glory of its inhabitants. We believe that these statues are ornaments from an important house/building.
