Lot Description:NORTHERN TERRITORY: THE 1883 EXPEDITION TO LOCATE “STURT’S TREE” Dec.10th 1883 four-page letter
headed “Palmerston” and addressed “The Acting Government Resident, Palmerston; written by James P. Hingston, Surveyor, in which he provides a day-by-day description of the trip “which I am glad to report was successful.” The letter is accompanied by a map, dated 13/12/83, signed by him and titled “Rough Sketch Shewing approximate position of J.M.D. STUART’S last marked tree. [NB: Although complete, all four pages of the letter have split down the middle with no loss of text.] -
Notes:Also accompanying the letter and map are reprinted pages from the book “Digging, Squatting, and Pioneering Life in The Northern Territory of South Australia” by Mrs. D.D. Daly [Sampson, Low, et al. 1887] in which the expedition is fully described.
