Lot Description:BORNEO BURLESQUE : comic tragedy, tragic comedy
artwork - Don Johnston and Jock Britz ; story - George Forbes; production: “Bill” Clayton, [Sydney; Printers Pty Ltd, 1947], #36 from a limited edition of 338 copies signed by Johnson, Britz, Forbes and Clayton. Original pale green cloth binding, with red, deep green and grey decoration. Containing several full page screen printed reproductions of posters produced for the plays. Endorsed in the ownership position by A.W. Walsh (sketched and listed as No.5 in the “Rogue’s Gallery” on pages 26 and 34, where he is identified as Lieutenant Colonel A.W. Walsh). Walsh has added “Changi : Feb - Jul.42; Sandakan : Jul. - Oct.42; Kuching : Nov. - Sep.45”. -
Notes:Lieutenant Colonel A.W. Walsh, commander 2/10th Field Regiment, was captured by Japanese forces. During his captivity, Walsh was appointed “commander” of the Kuching POW camp. The book is an account of the efforts of Australian prisoners of war to produce plays, and other entertainments during their internment at Kuching and Sandakan prison camps, 1942-44.
