  • Notes:
Edward Horace Thompson (1879-1949) was born in Seaton, Cumbria & became a painter after working for 25 years as a clerk in the local steelworks. He mainly painted Lake District scenes but also painted in Scotland under the name of Donald Paton. https://iandodgsonfinearts.co.uk/artists.php?artist=199 It is often quoted that he used the pseudonym Donald A. Paton solely for the Scottish views, but this is not the case. He used the pseudonym (from about 1924) because it improved his sales to local people, because they felt that a local painter couldn't be much good. As he became better known and more successful, the publishers Valentines of Dundee contact him to paint for them a series of postcards of Lake District scenes, followed by other scenic views some of which were based on photographs. In the 1940s, they produced calendars and booklets of his paintings. His last work for them was a series of 'chocolate box' country cottages executed in the year of his death. https://antiques-atlas.com/antique/edward_h_thompson_large_watercolour_r_derwent/as237a2110
