Glazed earthenware with incised pattern of symmetrical shell design

Artist's impressed stamps to base -
Notes:The artist was born in the village of Kwali in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was an indigenous female tradition. She learned to make pottery as a child, using the traditional coil pot method. Michael Cardew established the Pottery Training Centre in Suelja (Abuja) in 1952 & there she learnt wheel throwing, glazing & kiln firing, the use of slip, eventually becoming an instructor. Ladi Kwali's pots were featured in international exhibitions & she gave demonstraions in Great Britain & France, touing Ameria with Cardew in 1972, her work was shown at the Berkley Galleries in London to great acclaim.
