    An Early Ancestral Mask, Yuat River, Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea
    carved hardwood and natural pigments. A house mask (not worn over the face, instead hung in or at the men's house), light, hard wood, coloured dark brown, with remains of earth colour. The mask represents a Papuan ancestral spirit. Triangular face section, the nose long and drawn downwards (tip broken). Open nasal septum, small mouth. The left ear is broken. Good patina. First half of the 20th century.
