    ADVERTISING: Advertisement (34 x 16.5cm) for T.C. Williams Co.
a tobacco manufacturer based in Richmond, Virginia, which also produced cigar boxes and tobacco tins branded “Welcome Nugget.” The artwork, circa 1865, depicts a miner with one hand raised holding a gold nugget. Words near the miner’s mouth show dialogue: “Jack! Look at this.” He holds a pick in his other hand, and a shovel is stuck in a pile of recently dug earth. In the foreground is a rock with engraved words, while the background depicts a mine processing plant with an elevated railway. Engraved words on the rock read: “As the Welcome Nugget, weighing 2217oz., exceeds in purity & value, any lump of gold ever found, so this brand surpasses in quality any tobacco made.”
  • Notes:
The “Welcome Nugget” was the name given to a world famous large gold nugget, weighing 2,217 troy ounces (68.98 kg), that was discovered at Ballarat, on 9th June 1858. At the time it was the largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered, until the slightly larger “Welcome Stranger” (71.018 kg), was found nearby in 1869.
