Lot Description:A primitive Australian open-front kitchen dresser with tapering square-form legs, eucalypt and pine, mid 19th century
peg-joint construction, with original patination. Irregular cuts of timber used on the backing boards suggesting an “ad hoc” approach to the construction.
184cm high, 130cm wide, 68cm deep -
Notes:The dresser was purchased by the present vendor from “Paddy” Patrick Charles Griffiths of Greta West in 1977. “Paddy” was the son of Grace Kelly Griffiths, one of Ned Kelly’s younger sisters (1865 - 1940). Grace married Edward Albert “Ned” Griffiths (1861-1939) in 1889. They had nine children; Sarah Ann (1890-1976), Albert Edward (1893-?), Archibald Walter (1894-?), Amelia Adelaide (1896-?), Michael Leslie (1899-1958), Joseph (1899-1988), John James (1900-1960), Peter William (1903-1975) and Patrick Charles (1907-1989). “Paddy” had inherited the dresser from his mother when she passed away in 1940. She is buried at Greta Cemetery where the following tombstone has been erected: “Here within this cemetery in unmarked graves lie EDWARD KELLY, mother ELLEN, sisters & brothers MARGARET, GRACE, JAMES, DANIEL & ANNE buried nearby.”
