  Nolan first experimented with both abstraction and spray painting in the 1930s and returned to these in the 1980s though on a much larger scale. Writing in 1987, Jane Clark, curator of the National Gallery of Victoria's Nolan retrospective, described his most recent pictures as 'alchemy in paint', Sidney Nolan: Landscapes and Legends, ICCA, Sydney, 1987, p. 171
