    A rare silhouette portrait of Sir John Franklin, circa 1825, by George Atkinson (act.c.1806-1826)
    of oval form, the epaulettes, collar, buttons and hair with gilt highlights, brass mount, ebonised rectangular frame with an acorn decorated hanging hook, a trade card to the reverse gives an indication that the portrait was done by George Atkinson, 'Profilist to His Majesty' (George III) at no. 40 Old Steine, Brighton
    the image 7cm high, 5.5cm wide, the frame 13.5cm high, 12cm high
  • Notes:
    Sir John Franklin KCH FRS FLS FRGS was a British Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer. After serving in wars against Napoleonic France and the United States, he led two expeditions into the Canadian Arctic, in 1819 and 1825. He served as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1839 to 1843 where his name appears across the state and includes a town on the Huon River, the Franklin River and an electorate. Sir John Franklin is also commemorated with an impressive fountain in Franklin Square, Hobart.
