Notes:George Wallace, the famous Australian comedian, was a relative of Mason Fuller, a neighbour of the Murches in Avalon. Arthur Murch commenced the portrait studies when George was visiting Mason. Ria Murch writes about the experience in her biography 'Arthur Murch - An Artist's Life, 1902 -1989': although George was "hilarious on stage he was miserable in real life… the Avalon sittings came to an abrupt end after George took a short-cut to the lavatory - relieving himself over the front verandah… Mason ordered George out of the house and severed family connections. After that, Murch had to go to George's Darlinghurst flat to complete the portrait… George is a Murch 'Gothic'… Put a red biretta on him and (he) could pass for a Renaissance cardinal." The completed portrait was entered in the 1950 Archibald Prize and is now in the collection of Rockhampton Gallery, Queensland. Michelle Murch
