  General of the Army Raden Soedirman was a high-ranking Indonesian military officer during the Indonesian National Revolution. The first commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, he continues to be widely respected in the country. In December 1948, several days after Sudirman’s release from hospital where he had been treated for TB, the Dutch launched an assault on the capital. Sudirman and a small contingent escaped Dutch forces and left the city, making their headquarters at Sobo. There Sudirman commanded military activities throughout Java, including a show of force in Yogyakarta on 1 March 1949. When the Dutch began withdrawing, in July 1949 Sudirman was recalled to Yogyakarta and forbidden to fight further. In late 1949 his tuberculosis relapsed, and he retired to Magelang, where he died slightly more than a month after the Dutch recognised Indonesia’s independence. He is buried at Semaki Heroes’ Cemetery in Yogyakarta. The artist, Suromo Darposawego was born in Surakarta (Solo), in 1919. He began drawing for architect Robert Deppe in Batavia (Jakarta) in 1940. He also studied painting with Mas Pirngadie (1875-1936) and made paintings. glass, murals, and ceramics. Suromo was a member of the Persatoean Indonesian Image Experts (PERSAGI) in 1937, and participated in an exhibition at the Batavian Circle of Art. During the independence war years (1945-1949), Suromo was active as an artist and also active in writing. In the magazine ‘Mimbar Indonesia’ in 1949, he wrote about the technique of painting as an expression that was influenced by circumstances in an era. According to him, the important thing about painting was to completely empty the heart of the artist. When most artists moved to Yogyakarta, the capital of the Indonesian Government during the war, Suromo went to Solo and joined the Division IV Military Information Centre. In 1946 he became a member of the Indonesian Artists Movement (SIM) in Solo, and then moved to Yogyakarta. From 1948 to 1949 he joined the magazine ‘Artists’ and in 1950 became the chairman of the Surakarta Cultural Association. He taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta in 1951. Suromo made many woodcuts graphic works about daily life and people’s struggles. In 1956 he was awarded by the National Musjawarat Culture Agency for his graphic artworks. He participated in several group exhibitions and held a solo exhibition at the Lontar Gallery in Jakarta in 1998. His work is represented in several important public and private collections. His early paintings rarely appear on the market. Suromo died in Yogyakarta on January 24, 2003.
