  • Lot Description:
LABAN WHITE, ONE OF 160 CONVICTS TRANSPORTED ON THE ELIZA, JULY 1822 - An indenture
dated January 1837 by which Laban White agrees to rent to James Upton, for a period of three years, a piece of land “by Estimation Twenty Two Acres more or less being a Portion of Cornwallis Estate....in the District of Windsor....; signed by White and Upton.
  • Notes:
On his death, the SMH published an obituary: “Late Mr Laban White....On Friday night last, this worthy old resident of Windsor died, at the venerable age of 80. He had lived at Windsor for upwards of forty years. In his early career he successfully carried on business as a chemist and druggist, and subsequently as auctioneer. Retiring from business, he filled several public offices with credit and satisfaction.....” Interestingly, what was omitted from this brief summary, was the fact that White had arrived in New South Wales as a convict. He had been convicted of embezzlement at Bristol Quarter Sessions and sentenced to be transported for a term of 14 years.
