[London, Smith, Elder & Co., 1916] 1st ed., xiv, 464p., [44] leaves of plates; illustrations, maps, portraits; folded map. Rebound preserving original green covers.
  • Notes:
Taylor joined Scott’s “Terra Nova” Expedition (1910-13) and is described as its wittiest member. He had devices and notebooks hanging out of every pocket and a passion for being well-equipped. He was enraptured with geology and would immerse himself into any debate. His chief interest was the action of glacial ice in molding alpine landscapes. Taylor’s manuscript for this book was edited by Leonard Huxley (who had edited “Scott’s Last Expedition”). The narrative includes details of the western parties of both seasons, and the author’s comments on the gale at sea, the ambience of the ship’s wardroom at mealtime, the arrival and settling in at Cape Evans, life at Hut Point during March-April, 1911, and winter life at Cape Evans in 1911. The scarcest of the expedition’s firsthand narratives.
