  • Notes:
The first-generation Mustang (1964-1973) trail blazed the legendary Pony Car, and became a raging success on street and track for the Ford Motor Company. Lee Iacocca, Vice President and General Manager of Ford Division during this difficult time in the car building business, achieved his dream nonetheless to manufacture in volume a 4-seater, floor shift, shorter chassis, lightweight car at the approachable price of less than $2,500. The model utilised existing components from the Falcon and Fairlane and with its long hood, short deck, shorter wheelbase, wider track, lower seating position and lower overall stance, the Mustang became wildly popular and remains one of Ford’s most revered and sought after classics. This D code 289ci 4V 8-cylinder 2-door Hardtop was built on 31 July 1964 at the San Jose, CA., factory. It is recorded as being finished in Wimbledon White with a red crinkle vinyl standard interior. It was built with a C4 automatic transmission as a left-hand drive vehicle. It now has aftermarket power steering and air-conditioning installed and has been converted to right-hand drive. Various aspects under the bonnet are not standard such as the Cobra rocker covers and air cleaner. It is not known whether any further modifications have been made. A certain amount of urban legend surrounds this car in that it was believed to be the first 1964 Mustang imported to Australia and one of the first batch converted to RHD by Ford at Homebush. Determined sleuthing has not been able to solidly substantiate this as the well-recorded cars converted here were 1965 and 1966 models and bear Ford Australia factory stampings. This car appears to have been converted in the 1970s and was first registered as a RHD vehicle in January 1974. In May 2000, Clem first registered the ‘64 ? in South Australia and pursued the required inspection by Transport SA. In this correspondence, Clem states that he had purchased the car about 15 to 17 years earlier and therefore this Mustang has been held in his ownership for over 30 years. From entries in its 3 Historic Registration logbooks one can see it was used for runs out to Mallala on many occasions and The Climb to the Eagle on The Hill as recently as 2013, indicating this car as another of Clem’s favourites in the collection. The odometer reading is 33,450 miles approx. Notes also suggest the car was restored previously but the power steering was recently installed. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
