    1955 HUDSON HORNET SEDAN LHD
Chassis No: 7385. Engine No: F6346
  • Notes:
First introduced for 1951, the Hornet was based on Hudson’s “step-down” design first seen on the early Commodore range from 1948. The unit body merged both the body and chassis frame into a single structure with the floor pan fitted between the chassis rails. The step down into a Hudson was a new luxurious feel and the lower centre of gravity both functional and stylish. It handled well and treated its six passengers to a splendid ride. The new look fashion and the post war modern industrial changes taking place saw the final three Hornets become products of the newly formed American Motors Corporation (AMC). In 1954, the Hudson Motor Car Company had merged with Nash-Kelvinator, and future production of Hudson’s moved to Nash’s Wisconsin factory. From this point forward, Hudson’s were structured on the established Nash models featuring the Hudson’s stylish design themes. This deluxe 4-door sedan with comparatively conservative styling emerged from the design room and the wide grille and two-tone paintwork distinguished this model from its rivals. The 5-litre 308ci straight 6-cylinder L-head engine continued and for the first time ever, the Hornet could be ordered with a Packard V-8 engine and transmission. These new Hudson’s had the widest front seats in the industry and the highly efficient Weather Eye heating and ventilation with optional air-conditioning. Well respected automotive journalist Floyd Clymer rated the Hudson Hornet as,“the safest car built in the United States because of (1) the single unit welded body, (2) high quality braking system with added mechanical backup system, (3) roadability, general handling, and manoeuvrability; as well as (4) excellent acceleration and power for emergency situations”. Production for the 1955 four-door sedan reached 10,010. Clem Smith carefully selected this well looked after example to add to his prized collection of Hudson cars in May 2011 by purchasing it from Mr. Richards Borough of Fresno, California. This 6-cylinder, 4-speed column shift automatic is finished in the period red paintwork with a cream roof and a soft green interior and features its original Hudson radio and Weather Eye air-conditioning vent and heating system. It has an odometer reading of 32,466 miles approx. The accompanying Historic Logbook details the car’s participation in the Bay to Birdwood in 2013. The car is accompanied by the Vehicle Import Approval, Left Hand Drive exemption and Clem’s Historic Registration Logbook, purchase receipt and previous State of California Certificate of Title. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
