1972 CHRYSLER VALIANT VH CHARGER R/T E38 COUPE

  • Notes:
A muscle car of infamous notoriety on both the racing tracks and the boulevards traffic lights of Australian cities, the Valiant Charger formed the platform for Chrysler Australia’s participation in production car racing in the 1970’s. The range of cars was broad-based with variations of essentially two basic engines. These engines were developed around the Chrysler Hemi-6 and derivatives of the Chrysler LA engine V8. The VH Valiant Charger RT E38 was a 3-speed manual sports version with A84 Track Pack options with the optimum being the E38 engine with its higher compression ratio and different gearing which put out an impressive 280hp pulling a top speed of 203mph and 0-100k/hr in 6.4 seconds. Using the Mallala circuit in SA as their proving ground, and working initially with modified utes to simulate the Charger’s eventual specifications, Chrysler Australia, with the direct involvement of boss, David Brown, retained racing driver Leo Geoghegan to assist setting up the first competition model, designated E38, the objective being to challenge Ford and Holden at Bathurst. Chrysler launched the Bathurst car at Amaroo Park Raceway and a few lucky fully CAMS licenced motoring journalists were offered test drives. The E38’s raw appeal, responsiveness, the howling triple 2BBL side-draught Weber carburettors and the 265 cid, 4.3-litre Hemi revving out to 6000rpm embodied the muscle car spirit. The journalists loved it and not surprisingly the Charger won the 1971 Australian Wheels Car of the Year Award. This authentic 1972 R/T E38 was built in December 1971, this 265Ci “6 Pack” straight 6-cylinder, triple Weber, 3-speed manual has the full VH track pack and the 3.23:1 ratio “Sure Grip” rear axle and front anti-roll bar. The E38 is further complimented with the full interior sports dress-up package including reclining bucket seats, carpets and 3-spoke 14 x 6” magnesium wheels. This car is authenticated by the factory codes stamped on the compliance plate ‘A66/A87/A95/D53/E38’ and ‘70S29’ to the inner driver side guard. The odometer reading is 50,340 miles approx. This genuine matching numbers E38 with all the options other than the big fuel tank was acquired by Clem from Stephens Chrysler of Albury Wodonga on his retirement. This car offers an opportunity to acquire a well restored matching number E38 R/T Charger from a legendary Chrysler owner with the added provenance of having resided on such hallowed ground for the model given the E38 was first tested at Mallala with Leo Geoghegan behind the wheel. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
