  • Lot Description:
    1934 HUDSON 8 COUPE
Chassis No: 96679. Engine No: 52169
  • Notes:
Although it is believed that 1933 was the only year the Essex-Terraplanes were built using the optional 4.2-litre 8-cylinder engine, the Hudson also had the identical basic engine utilising an earlier style updraft carburettor. This car was assembled in Australia and has been registered as a 1934 Hudson Terraplane 8. These models are also referred to as the Doctor’s Coupe. The 1933 Essex-Terraplane and Hudson 8-cylinder cars are notable as being amongst the highest horsepower-to-weight ratio of any production car in the world at the time. This model became the getaway car of choice for notorious people such as John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson for its speed, handling, suicide doors and unostentatious styling. This short generation of lightweight 8Cs set innumerable speed records in the United States and abroad including holding the record for the race to the Summit of Mount Washington for some 20 years. This example for auction is distinguished by the vent doors on the hood as opposed to the 6-cylinder cars that had stamped hood louvers. It was purchased by Clem Smith in February 2009 from Mr. L.F Connell. There is a registration label indicating this car had resided in Tasmania in 1961. It currently shows an odometer reading of 85,255 miles. This floor shift manual sporting coupe with Dicky seat is powered by the distinguishable side-valve straight-8 254ci engine and the hallmark Art Nouveau styling of the era. No additional work has been carried out in recent times and the car is presented, as said in Clem’s notes, “in as is” running order. The car retains the metallic green duco, faux timber dashboard with brown interior trim and renewed carpets. It runs on Firestone Atlas Cross ply tyres. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
