  • Lot Description:
    1952 FIAT 500 TOPOLINO TYPE C
    Engine No: 162093
  • Notes:
The Topolino was launched in 1937 and three models or types were produced until 1955. Over the 18-year production period, only minor mechanical and cosmetic changes were introduced. It was equipped with a 569 cc four-cylinder, side-valve, water-cooled engine mounted in front of the front axle deeming it a motor car rather than a cycle car. The radiator was located behind the engine lowering the aerodynamic nose profile allowing for very good visibility in such a minute vehicle. The rear suspension used quarter-elliptic rear springs, but commuters and party goers had a habit of squeezing four or five people into the little two-seater. Therefore, the later types apparently have the extended chassis at the rear allowing for stronger semi-elliptic springs. Three types were produced. Type A and B shared the same body, only the engine of Type B had 16 hp vs. 13 hp of Type A. Type C was introduced in 1949 with a restyled body and the same 16hp engine as Type B and could achieve a top speed 59mph factory confirmed (but it is not known how many passengers were in the car at time of the speed trial). Type C was produced until 1955. Nearly 520,000 Fiat Topolinos were sold. Accompanying registration certificates indicate this car was owned by Mr. Gerard Kopp of Goodwood S.A. since 1975. Mr Kopp sold the car to Clem Smith in March 2011. The car presents with its 4-speed manual floor shift gearbox, suicide doors, bucket seats, fold back sunroof and with an odometer reading of 83,466 miles approx. This little gem offers a keen enthusiast a good restoration project at an approachable price level. It is an opportunity to acquire an item from Clem’s Collection that reflects his enthusiasm for the Fiat marque having completed the 1954 Redex Trial with Reg Sparks in a Fiat 1100. This vehicle will be sold unregistered. NO RESERVE.
