    1970 AMC RAMBLER JAVELIN COUPE
Chassis No: XK21232. Engine No: X1057305X04
  • Notes:
Amongst AMC’s most highly regarded muscle cars were those assembled in Australia namely the Rebel, Matador, Hornet, Javelin and AMX. The most revered and collectable of these models are the Javelin and AMX, the only American muscle cars of the genre built in the country. Built for performance, these muscle cars were marketed as “super” luxury cars. Options weren’t overly extravagant but the Javelin did come equipped with a 210kW 5.6-litre V8, three-speed floor shift “shift command” automatic, power steering, a ‘twin-grip’ limited slip differential and 11 ? in power disc brakes front and 10in rear drums. The Australian made radial ply 205 by 14in tyres were fitted as standard. In 1968, the retail price for this beast was a staggering $7495, which was considerably more than the Javelin’s main competition being the Holden HK Monaro GTS with 327 CID V8 ($3790) and the Ford XT GT Falcon ($4200). The competition was just too great and the Javelin disappeared from dealerships by 1972 with a mere 258 models produced approx. Importantly, the AMI built Ramblers were considered reliable, with the mechanicals being normally solid and trouble free. The Javelin is considered extremely rare with the generally accepted Australian build numbers as follows: 1968 Javelin – 90 units; 1969 Javelin – 50 units; 1970 Javelin – 70 units; there were no 1971 Javelins built; 1972 Javelin – 48 units. This very good example for auction was bought by Clem Smith in February 2010 from a Mr. Andrew Thompson of Tanunda, South Australia. The car is painted in period Bronze with an off-white vinyl trim, black dash board trim and carpets. The interior is enhanced with faux timber instrument panel and centre console. The car has been fitted with an after-market air-conditioning unit. We are informed this car won the award for ‘Best AMC Rambler at the Chryslers on the Murray 2015’ meeting. It would be hard to find a better presented original AMC Javelin in Australia. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
