A fine Raver Kirman pictorial rug, southeast Iran, early 20th century
    74 x 60 cm
  • Notes:
This well-drawn rug depicting the Virgin and Child is modelled on the holy icons hung in Armenian churches. Christianity has a long history in Iran, predating the arrival of Islam in the 7th century. Cities such as Tehran, Isfahan and Kirman were home to communities of Armenians who prospered as merchants and proprietors of workshops in the silk and carpet weaving industries. The colour palette of the rug, its borders and infill ornaments are all characteristic of Kirman production.
