Lot Description:A fine Ravar Kirman pictorial rug, southeast Iran, late 19th/early 20th century
213 x 128 cm -
Notes:This outstanding portrait rug has at its centre an image of Feraydun Shah, one of the mythical hero-kings of the Shahnama (‘Book of Kings’), who was murdered by his brothers in a power struggle. His likeness is set within a central medallion in a prayer- rug layout, with the field filled with flowering shrubs, birds and floral sprays, and the spandrels filled with realistically-drawn birds and flowers, as if illustrating a rose and nightingale romance. The delicacy of the rug’s design and the subtlety of its colour palette is characteristic of the best of the Kirman weavings.
