    1966 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER SHADOW 2 DOOR SALOON
Chassis No. CRH 2154; Engine No. 2154
  • Notes:
When the Silver Shadow was announced in 1965, it already had a decade of design and development behind it. This model had undergone more rigorous testing than any other Rolls-Royce being a completely new design for the marque. Moving away from the conservative and traditional aspects of the Silver Cloud, the Silver Shadow was designed ab initio - for the owner-driver rather than the pre-war chauffeur-driven cars. With a dramatic reduction in size, being 5" lower, 7" shorter and 3½" narrower than the Silver Cloud, this car was sleek, nimble and fun to drive. The technical specifications were impressive too, with integral-monocoque construction; hydraulically self-levelling suspension; all-round disc brakes and independent rear suspension. Its 6230cc V8 engine was specifically selected for its suitability to automatic transmission and fuel consumption efficiency. To those who appreciate and understand Rolls-Royce's commitment to engineering, the V8 engine was a work of art. Weighing approximately 30lbs (14kg) less than the 6-cylinder it replaced, this engine had almost 30 per cent greater swept volume. Painstakingly developed, this unit promised a lifetime of smooth running providing it was properly maintained. Without doubt the most recognisable hallmark of Rolls-Royce is its radiator, and, in this respect, the Silver Shadow is no exception. To untrained eyes, the imposing radiator shell appears quite flat and vertical when, in fact, it is neither. It took twelve highly skilled metal workers, all of whom had at least 25 years' experience in service to the marque, to make the hallowed radiators. Rolls-Royce righteously believed that no-one outside the factory could do the job as well. Looking more like silver or silver plate than stainless steel, the extra-ordinary perfect finish was the result of hours of polishing. The shell, comprised of no less than eleven separate items of steel, all of which being approximately 1/16th inch in thickness, was worked until the edges were perfectly mitred. The ten years of development brought about a complete revolution because while all Rolls-Royce's virtues remained as before, there was an improved control and smoothness of ride that gave the new Silver Shadow a modern character. Deceptively fast but feather light to control, the car's acceleration was impressive and its cornering speed was surprisingly high. Accompanying documentation from the International Club for Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts (RREC) confirm that CRH2154 was delivered on the 30th March 1967 to the retailer Charles Follett Ltd, Berkley Street, London. This file includes copies of the original order ledger, warranty, inspection reports and confirms the livery of Dawn Blue with grey leather interior. Also with this paperwork is a brass plaque, purportedly removed from the car when it was re-painted that reads: 'Built for Lord Louis Mountbatten' but no other information relating to this provenance has come to light. This vehicle made its way to Leon Redman in Arizona in the 1980s before being sold to Edward Cartledge in 1989 who imported it into Australia. Over the next 27 years the car changed ownership several times in Melbourne, including to Mr. Jeremy Mantello and extensive work was carried out during his tenure. As recent as July 2016, the current owner spent over $11,000 with R.A. McDermott and Co. preparing the car for sale (receipts available upon request). This four-speed automatic presents very well and with recent works from Rolls-Royce specialists, this luxury car is ready to be used and enjoyed as a stylish 1960s 2 door coupe coach built by Mulliner Park Ward. "The quality remains long after the price is forgotten." Sir Henry Royce, Bt. O.B.E., M.I.M.E, M.I.A.E. This vehicle will be sold unregistered
