  • Notes:
Famous for their precise craftsmanship and innovation, the pre-Fiat Lancias are regarded as being in a class of their own. Designed in-house by Piero Castagnero, Lancia introduced the Fulvia Coupé in 1965. For the road cars, the power plant was similar to that used on most production Lancias from the era of the Lambda, being a narrow-angled V4 engine configuration with dual overhead camshafts, alloy cam boxes & cylinder head and a cast iron cylinder block with twin Solex carburettors. In a contemporary report, the British motoring journalist, Bill Boddy, described the Fulvia as "The best small car currently available". Standard coupe and Rallye variants followed with the light-weight 1.3-litre HF being fitted with alloy doors and bonnet. Finally, the ultimate Rallye 1.6 HF model, powered by the 1584cc engine, was produced between 1969 and 1970. The Fulvia Rallye 1.6 HF with designated chassis numbers 818.540/541, evolved from the Rallye 1.3 HF and was known as the Fanalone or beacon, for its large diameter main beam Carello headlights. It featured negative camber front suspension geometry, with light alloy 6" J13 wheels and a close-ratio 5 speed gearbox as well as flared fibreglass wheel arches. This pedigree model can also be distinguished by the triangular holes between the headlights and the grille. Only 1,258 examples (approx.) were produced. (The works rally-specification Fanalone are so rare that a mere 20 cars (approx.) were built and raced by the Lancia works rally team until 1974 when they were superseded by competition versions of the Stratos.) This car on offer has a most interesting provenance. It was purchased new by Mr. Michael Newberry on New Year's Eve, 1969, and it was retained in his ownership for 30 years. The car was then acquired by Mr. Max Aitkin in c1999. Aitkin, the great grandson of Lord Beaverbrook and the son of Max Atkin, 3rd Baron Beaverbrook, who owned the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes Boat Race, competed in the 1999 Le Centenaire Tour Auto in this car with Gregor Fisken. The car has its Historic Vehicle Identity form from the HSCC for Class D Historic R/Sports with its previous history specified as a standard road car until it was prepared for HSCC 1960's road sports. Aitkin sold the car to the current owner c2008 when it was brought to Australia. This well-prepared race and rally car is fitted with its required full roll cage, seats and harnesses. It has a new radiator and essential service items attended to which include the valve clearances, engine oil and filter replacements, new coolant and top radiator hose, twin Solex carburettors overhauled, a new distributor cap, front suspension replacements with new bushings and tie rod ends and it has been fitted with new tyres making this exceptional and limited production track and rally car ready for its next high performance adventure. As an unusual augmentation this car will be sold with its original UK registration number plates of NMA51H which further substantiates this Lancia's comprehensive provenance. This vehicle will be sold unregistered
