    1954 AUSTIN-HEALEY 100
Chassis no: 4781-02; Engine no: 0-71573-P
  • Notes:
The Austin-Healey came about as a result of the association between Austin and the Donald Healey Motor Company which began in 1952 and lasted until 1970 when Austin became part of British Leyland. In total over 200,000 Austin-Healeys were built. The first of these, the Austin-Healy 100 (BN1, BN2, 100M and 100S) accounted for just 8% of the total production, were true open sports cars, featuring a four cylinder 2,660cc engine, twin SU carburettors, with three-speed transmission. Designed by Gerry Croker the 100 was built to fill a market gap, particularly in the USA, identified by Donald Healey, for a car to fit between The Jaguar XK120 and the MG. The Austin-Healey was a very successful car which over time gained an enviable reputation as a fast and reliable competition car which appeared at Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, and Sebring 12 Hour Race. The later iterations of the vehicle, the 100-6 and 3000, would gain wins at the Alpine Rally, Liege-Rome-Liege, Acropolis Rally and other major events. The four-cylinder Austin-Healeys also took world speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1953. Launched in 1953 the BN1 chassis was built by John Thompson Motor Pressings from drawings provided by the Donald Healey Motor Company. It was replaced by the BN2 in 1955. 10,030 (including 20 pre-production cars) units were built. This 1954 Austin-Healey 100 is a designated BN1. It is one of a few Australian delivered cars and has been in current ownership for the last ten years after having been stored in South Australia for the previous 27 years. Having undergone an assiduous restoration at the hands of its current owner, which was completed in early 2014, this Austin-Healey 100 BN1 is presented in excellent condition and is currently road-registered in Western Australia. It has been partly configured to 100M specifications utilising correct after-market Le Mans Kit components (which were available from 1954 onwards) and includes such distinctive features as the fluted aluminium bonnet with leather strap, bigger radiator, uprated brakes etc. It sits on new tyres and rims, though, believed original rims accompany the vehicle, as do numerous other spares. These spares include its original Austin A70 motor (engine number 1B202771) with A90 cylinder head (number 1B2286) and Westlake Overdrive (number 28/292/4238). The odometer reading of just under 45,000 miles is believed correct for the two engines in total, with the Austin A90 engine installed (engine number 0-71573-P, cylinder head number 1B1464, block number 1B23632, Westlake Overdrive number 28/1292/4610) having covered less than 1000 miles in the car since being completely overhauled. As Donald Healey himself said, "I'm not against modifying the cars to increase performance. We did it all the time in racing". The vehicle is also accompanied by a mobile trolley for maintenance and assembly of the motor; its tonneau cover and fold down hood both in good condition, and tool kit. This vehicle will be sold unregistered
