  • Notes:
The rebirth of the Holden Monaro and the appearance of the first Coupe concept car at the 1998 Sydney Motor Show spoke voluminously to the passionate and knowledgeable Australian car enthusiast. The fact that the Monaro had made it into production and how local sales and exports actually took off was heroic. Although its 12,000 local sales were initially thought to have limited collectability, as these 21st century models now approach classic status, a good CV8 Series Monaro is exciting to the collector. Holden's design team never intended to revive the Monaro name or produce it, but the exercise was to highlight how correct the Commodore family car range had become in light of the launch of Ford's first all new Falcon in a decade. It was devastatingly effective on both scores when the AU Falcon struggled in the popularity stakes. The Coupe's sleek good looks are attributed to its 84 new body panels, a windscreen raked back by two degrees and roofline lowered by 40mm. The B-pillar section was moved rearwards to match new doors that were extended by 150mm along with a myriad of subtle and stylish fine-tuning elements around the rear. Time and budget unfortunately didn't allow more chrome around the side window line to highlight the coupe's Monaro pedigree. But, a beautiful coupe none the less was created that certainly sings of its earlier iconic super car lineage. During the cost-driven, recession market of the late 1990s, compromises to the suspension and dynamics of the VT Commodore were necessary and not good enough for a high- performance coupe. Holden was conscious that the initial hyped reaction to the Monaro concept car may subside by the time the car reached production and it was tooled up within 22 months. The concept car was hidden from view but effective public campaigning saw Holden revive the revered Monaro name. In so doing, some challenges were presented when expectations for the beloved Monaro understandably demanded more than a two door version of an existing Commodore. The return of Peter Hanenberger as Holden's new Chairman and Managing Director was opportune after his earlier 1970s time as an excellent suspension engineer for Holden. Determined to see this car succeed, Hanenberger reversed the cost cutting measures that were compromising handling and performance in the VT range and dramatically improved quality. His determination that the Monaro's dynamics measured up to its looks saw it released in only two specifications: the CV6 with supercharged V6 and auto only, and the CV8 with the Gen III V8 with a choice of six-speed manual or auto. This led to two distinct Monaro's, the V2 in Series I, II and III guises and this was where it was meant to end. But, further development ensued with the wild 2004 VZ series which incorporated a combination of changes for the US export Pontiac GTO. The ultimate US version with the LS2 engine was reserved for HSV variants only in Australia. After all this evaluation and marketing strategy, the V2 series became known as a gender neutral sports car for those who well remembered the original. These buyers wanted the best of everything and the CV6 was later dropped. The Monaro's high price made it difficult to establish a more youthful image for younger buyers, but this has improved in the second- hand market. This CV8 Series 11, 6-speed manual is powered by the V2 5.7-litre V8. Painted in a striking Impulse Blue with a dark blue leather interior, this factory optioned model was (badged as CV8-R) delivered new to Mr. Michael Gallasch of West Lakes, SA on 28th October 2003 from City Holden, Adelaide. Mr. Gallasch was a mechanical engineer with Holden at the time of purchase. The factory V2 Series 2 options include: five spoke alloy 18 inch wheels; tuned exhaust with twin tail pipes; a V8 engine boosted to 235kW and optimised body stiffness; front fog lights; revised dash to match the latest Commodore; multi-function control screen; leather steering wheel and a comprehensive integrated stereo system. The only post- production modification is the addition of a reversing camera (currently disconnected). The vendor is the second owner and bought the car with an odometer reading of just 2000kms. He has not taken it out in inclement weather. The car is accompanied with its original owner's handbook and engine service booklet. Presented here is the opportunity for a discerning buyer to acquire a fully optioned two owner collectors' car of tomorrow which has covered less than 15,000 kms from new. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
