Comprising: A New Voyage Round the World... Second edition [and] Voyages and Descriptions, Vol. II, in Three Parts [and] A Voyage to New Holland, &c., in the year 1699 [and] A Continuation of a Voyage to New Holland. Four volumes, octavo, with 42 plates and folding maps in total, panelled calf of the period (not completely matching but essentially of similar design, as one expects with Dampier’s works published over such a long period), the first volume rebacked with the original spine mounted, joints cracked and wearing on the second volume and second part of volume three, first part of volume three rebacked in style. London, 1697 – 1699 – 1703 – 1709.
  • Notes:
Unusually, this is a set with the uniform early provenance of George Weare Brackenridge 1803. Generally regarded as the greatest English explorer and navigator before Cook, Dampier was also a popular and an exciting storyteller who inspired both Swift and Defoe. He was the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, in January, 1688. On this occasion Dampier touched only briefly on the coast of New Holland, making a survey of the north-west coast near King Sound. But after the first volume of his voyages had been published to great public acclaim in 1697, Dampier was given the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy and command of the Roebuck to undertake the first British expedition specifically directed to the exploration of New Holland. He explored the west coast of New Holland, giving a very uncomplimentary report of what he saw, as well as the south coast of New Guinea, discovering New Britain and Dampier Strait, and completed his circumnavigation in 1701. The first volume is a second edition, the other three are first editions. Hill 2, 417, 419, 420, and 421.
