  • Notes:
Ferrari and motor racing are one and the same; there is no name so deeply entwined in the glories of Formula 1 and world sports car racing over the last 65 years. Enzo Ferrari lived to win at all costs in his three eminent roles of driver, team manager and constructor and the fighting spirit of this legendary figure lives on in every car that bears his name. To any ear attuned to the exhilaration of motorsport, the symphonic note of a Ferrari, even one built with the stringent emission rules of today, exudes the history of Le Mans, Monza and the Targa Florio. Ferrari is incomparable - the pinnacle of excitement and excellence, the one name that quickens the pulse like no other. The design and artistic magnificence of the prototypes, the sports cars and the road-going coupes emblazoned with the prancing horse is equally obvious to the eye. Continuing in their proud tradition Ferrari built the two-seater, mid-engined, rear wheel drive, V8-powered 360 coupe from 1999 to 2005. It succeeded the F355 and was replaced by the F430. For the 360 Ferrari produced an entirely new all-aluminium space-frame chassis by partnering with Alcoa, resulting in a 40% stiffer chassis than the F355 built with steel. The new Pininfarina body design moved away from the sharp angles and flip-up headlights of the 1990s. Despite a 10% increase in overall dimensions the car was 28% lighter and with a superb 400 bhp (300 kW) engine featuring a flat plane crankshaft and titanium connecting rods, the power to weight ratio, and thus performance, was significantly improved over the F355 - 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) was achieved in 4.3 secs, down from 4.6 secs. The Ferrari 360 is regarded as a major leap forward from the F355 both in performance and packaging with many enthusiasts ranking it 'the best sports car ever'. The first model was the 360 Modena followed by the 360 Spider and lastly a special edition Challenge Stradale; the highest-performing road-legal version of the 360 produced by the factory. There were 7,565 Spiders built including 725 in right hand drive. The 360 Spider is the twentieth road-going Ferrari sports car designed with a Spider variant in mind. The factory strengthened the sills, stiffened the front of the floor-pan and redesigned and strengthened the windscreen frame and roll bars. Its curvaceously designed body work reveals its 3.6-litre engine visible under a glass hood. The engine is confined in space by the convertible top's storage area and draws additional air supply through especially large side grills. Notwithstanding the car's mid-mounted V8 engine, the electrically operated top stows into the compartment when not in use; transforming the closed top to a spider is a two-stage folding action. This Australian-delivered manual 360 Spider was bought from Lance Dixon Ferrari of Melbourne in November, 2003. With Rosso Corsa coachwork, 6-speed manual transmission, Nero leather seats and Rosso carpets, Rosso brake callipers and Nero soft top it has travelled a mere 9,671 kilometres. Housed with Zagami in Melbourne before passing to the current second ownership in May 2013, it has been driven on few occasions since with the view of maintaining its low kilometres; it has been always garaged and never taken out in inclement weather. A full Ferrari service history is recorded by Lance Dixon and Zagami including its major service replacing the cam belts at 9141 kms and lastly serviced by Zagami in December 2012, at 9241 kms. A 26-point maintenance check was attended to in July 2014. It is complete with two keys with remotes, service books and tool kit in unused condition - typical of the small touches that make this low-kilometre example of such an iconic car an enviable acquisition.
