  A 1965 Alfa Romeo TZ1 Recreation by Greppi
  Serial number 750003Chassis number 10511AR750003Heir to the Alfa Romeo Giulia was the Giulietta, a three box saloon with crumple zone body and a five speed gearbox introduced in 1962. The most famous sports version of this car was of course the TZ or Tubulare Zagato. Developed over a four-year period largely by ex-Ferrari engineer Carlo Chiti's Autodelta racing outfit (which was soon incorporated into Alfa Romeo as its official competition division), the TZ was truly ahead of its time. Not only did it employ cutting-edge tubular chassis construction and wear beautiful hand-beaten aluminium bodywork penned by Zagato's Ercole Spada; it also boasted double-wishbone suspension (independently sprung at the rear), all-round disc brakes, and groundbreaking aerodynamics. Of the latter, the low frontal area and kamm-tailed rear are the most apparent, also lending the TZ its unmistakable silhouette. It was built by master craftsman Giorgio Greppi at his Carrozeria in the small town of Colico on the north eastern shores of Lago Como in Northern Italy. Greppi himself has signed a testimony confirming that this car was built by him at the beginning of the 1990s as a recreation of an original car. It is as close to one of the original 112 cars built by Alfa Romeo in the 1960s as it is possible to be without actually being a Factory car. A sprightly septuagenarian, Greppi has been hand crafting remarkable cars since the 1950s and continues to do so today. As well as having a fantastic reputation for recreating cars such as the TZ1 and the Disco Volante he also produces wonderful one-offs including the F.LLI.Frigerio 'Berlinetta SS' which appeared at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2104.This TZ1 was originally sold by Greppi to a Bologna based business man and then it is believed the vehicle spent time in Germany. The car was purchased by the current owner via a broker from the USA in 2009. The owner at that time had just purchased a real TZ-1 and this car was now superfluous to his needs. The chassis number was discovered under layers of paint on the firewall in 2010 and is well documented in the following Alfa website:http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/limited-production-1960-1977/168418-tz1-replica-searching-history.htmlIt is important to note that this car does not come with continuous documentation and is not portrayed as an Autodelta built TZ-1.Believed to be the only TZ-1 in the southern hemisphere the car had a rebuilt engine (with high com pistons) and gearbox (close ratio gear set) in 2013. The original side exhaust was removed and replaced with a bespoke handmade rear exhaust to make for more comfortable road use.This TZ-1 has been invited over a number of years to participate in the Albert Park Grand Prix Historic racing events. In 2012 it won the People's Choice award at the Sandown Historics and has also competed in regularity events at the Phillip Island Historics in 2011 and 2012. In 2014 the TZ-1 featured on the rear page of the Phillip Island Historics program and has won numerous Alfa club awards. The car is well sorted being part-owned by club life member, regarded Alfa Romeo mechanic and noted racing driver, Hugh Harrison.The TZ-1 was a race car that in-period was often crashed, bashed and rebuilt. The number of TZ-1s that have all their original bodywork and mechanical components is now very small. A quick perusal of the TZ-1 chassis histories (refer to www.zagato-cars.com) suggests that at least 80% of the TZ-1s have suffered serious crash damage, been destroyed, reborn, re-bodied, lost engines, etc. in their lives. This faithful TZ-1 recreation offers the same looks, ambience, performance and experience of an original TZ-1.
