  • Notes:
The Ford Mustang is more than an American automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. It is the stuff of legends. Built under the general management of Lee Iacocca and his assistant-general manager and chief engineer, Donald N. Frey, the car was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair. The 1965 Mustang was Ford's most successful launch since the Model A. From a sales forecast of less than 100,000 units for the first year this number was surpassed in the first 3 months. A record 318,000 cars were sold during the model year and subsequently more than one million Mustangs were built in the first 18 months. Upgrade of the V8 engine to the enduring 289 CID (4.7 l) gave birth to the K-Code: a special high performance 289 cubic-inch engine designated Hi-Po. Popularity of the Mustang led Shelby American, founded by Carroll Shelby to build and market high performance parts and modified cars for individuals. The first run of just 562 Shelby modified K-Code-based GT 350 Mustang fastbacks including 34 R competition models were built in 1965. So impactful was this fabulous evocation that for 1966, 2,378 GT-350s were built. The car lost its Mustang tag and was sold simply as the GT 350 with changes to the rear plexi-glass quarter-panel windows, replacing the factory extractor vents, functional brake scoops and optional SelectShift 3-speed automatic and an optional Paxton supercharger. Special modifications to the GT 350 included: high rise intake manifold, headers, functioning cooling ducts, solid high lifter revving engine, finned aluminium oil pan, oversize rear brakes, shockers and sway bars. The 1966 models came with a dual-exhaust that exited at the rear of the car. The normal factory fold-down rear seat was optional. Of the 1966 run, it is believed 999 cars plus 2 prototypes were made exclusively for Hertz Rent-A-Car. Eighty-five Hertz cars were available in four-speed manual and were advertised as "Rent-a-Racer" cars. These cars were sometimes raced in production classes at SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) events and were rumored to have been returned to Hertz bearing evidence of roll bars having been installed. Hertz ordered the last 800 models with black paint, gold stripes and black interior, although a few were white with blue stripes. After their rental-car lives were finished, they were returned to Ford for refurbishment and sold to the public as "GT 350-H" models. This 1966 Shelby GT-350 H # 1817 is a good example of a well-preserved competition car. The VIN number has been verified by the 65-66 Shelby Registrar for Shelby America Automobile Club (SAAC). It has been noted in the documentation provided that the car was a factory automatic and has been converted to a 4-speed manual over time by a previous owner sometime during its SCCA racing era prior to 1979. Paxton Superchargers were fitted to just a handful of 1966 GT-350s and whilst records show receipts dated 27th March 2013 from Walkinshaw Performance Melbourne for the purchase and fitting of a new Paxton supercharger, there are records showing that a Paxton supercharger was rebuilt prior to 1979 which may mean this car was fitted with this by an earlier owner. This authentic GT350 Shelby Hertz car for sale at auction presents a unique opportunity to purchase one of the world's most desired, keenly sought after and rare American Muscle cars. This vehicle is endorsed by the Shelby America Automobile Club and documentation available upon request.
