  • Notes:
Surviving two world wars BMW has forged a hard-won reputation for engineering standards and stylish design. Primarily a builder of combat aero engines, BMW built motorcycles from 1923 and later in 1928, acquired Dixi [a licensed Austin Seven distributor] before producing cars of its own design from 1933. During the late 1950s BMW faced bankruptcy until in 1960 German Industrialists acquired a controlling interest. A DM 50,000,000 loan from the Bavarian government gave rise to the highly successful Neue Klasse or New Class car line, the foundation of future BMWs. Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971, the 3.0CS series styled by Wilhelm Hofmeister carried an aggressive nose, twin circular headlights, matte black side intakes and a smaller kidney shaped grille. The 3.0CS boasted 180bhp engine and 4-wheel vented disc brakes. A statement of style, high-performance and racing success, the E9 restored BMW's fortunes. Featuring Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection producing 200bhp at 5500 rpm with 9.5:1 compression, just 8,199 3.0CSi were built, a mere 207 in right hand drive, 128 in 1974. Power steering, automatic transmission and an expensive air-conditioning system were luxurious extras. Karmann at OsnabrŸck built the 3.0CSi coupes, sedans were assembled at BMW Munich and the model remained on sale until late 1975. Elegant, expensive, fast and refined, the popular 3-litre coupe gave rise to the CSL lightweight, fully homologated derivative in 1972 winning five European Touring Car Championships. Only 1,096 were built. The ultimate evocation of the CSL, the limited edition Batmobile, with aerodynamic add-on kits, was one of the most successful production racing cars ever. Reputedly one of only 12 factory RHD's sold new in Australia, this fully restored manual 3.0CSi has been in the same ownership for 25 years. Repainted in splendid German Silver appointed with distinctive CSL seats upholstered in black wool, the car retains the complete, original factory toolkit and sunroof, key features of this fine and desirable BMW.
