  • Notes:
Marmon Motor Car Company, founded by Howard C. Marmon [1876-1943] was a significant American automobile maker from 1903 until 1933. Over this span, the Indianapolis, Illinois-based manufacturer produced more than 110,000 cars, of which, according to the 2014 Marmon Directory, only 391 Marmon cars survive across the world in varying stages of repair. Of these, less than half are drivable or totally restored. The oldest is a rare 1910 Model 32. Most notably, a Marmon Wasp driven by racer and company engineer, Ray Harroun, won the first-ever Indianapolis 500 motor race in 1911. Featuring arguably the world's first known rear vision mirror, this iconic Marmon remains on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame museum. The provenance of the Marmon E75 runs from 1916 with the Model 34A which was at the forefront of technology of the time using an aluminium straight-6 motor and aluminium body and chassis components to reduce overall weight to just 3295 lb (1495 kg). A Model 34 was driven coast-to-coast as a publicity stunt, beating Erwin Cannonball Baker's record to much fanfare. Besides gaining respect for the brand, this effort gained the custom of the US military. Further advanced improvements culminated in the 1927 E75 that carried a price tag of US $3,560 in 1927. A total of 42,800 six-cylinder cars were built over 12 years at an average of 3567 cars per annum and the 1927 E75 accounted for 3,000 of these. According to the Marmon Club Register [USA] just twenty of this model, the last six-cylinder car produced by the company, survive. Noted for pioneering the use of aluminium and the development of a V-16 engine, Marmon was not only one of the great names in early automotive annals but noted also as the manufacturer during World War 1 of flawlessly produced Liberty aircraft engines. During 1933, the worst year of the Great Depression, Marmon was forced to abandon automobile production but retained the manufacture of automotive components and trucks. Later, after Marmon joined forces with Colonel Arthur Herrington, a new company, Marmon-Herrington rose to prominence as the manufacturer of all-wheel drive military and civilian vehicles. This rare and fine example of the E75 model was originally bodied by E. H. Wilson of Moline Illinois and is the only 7-seater custom-built tourer in the world by this coachbuilder. The AOMC records reveal that in 1927 the first owner was Dr A. B. Webb of Linton, Victoria, with the registration number 716. No records exist from 1927-1930 but by 1935 the car was owned by Mrs Elizabeth Cohen of Bentleigh and registered 230-659. This registration number was retained when the car's ownership was transferred to Gwen Cohen. In 1950 Mr. George Duke of Sorrento owned the car, which carried the registration PL-119 until 1966 when it was purchased by Mr. Ken Greenwood of Aubrey, who, in 1994 sold the car to its current owner. Powered by a 5.5 litre in-line six-cylinder OHV engine with an output of 85 bhp at 2,700 rpm, the engine has twin coil ignition, two plugs per cylinder with two sets of points - one for each coil. 3-speed manual and reverse gear transmission with four wheel mechanical brakes and rear-hand brake complete the drive train. The subject of a six-year restoration, the paintwork on this magnificent Marmon has been meticulously matched to its original colour scheme of taupe and grey. Living up to the Marmon slogan, "A Mechanical Masterpiece" this example is a rare and significant tribute to a once proud pioneer automobile manufacturer. A selection of spare parts accompany this vehicle.
