  • Notes:
Marcos was founded in 1959 in Dolgellau, North Wales by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. The name derived from their surnames. Some of the world's top driver's started their careers in Marcos cars, among them: Jackie Stewart, Jonathan Palmer, Derek Bell and Jackie Oliver. From his work on Mosquito combat aircraft, Costin drew inspiration for the unique Marcos plywood chassis. In 1961, brothers Peter and Dennis Adams (ex RAF) developed the Marcos Fastback GT, which in 1963 dazzled the London Racing Car Show with its futuristic aerodynamics. Fabricated from thin laminated plywood sheets, the strong monocoque, low weight, internationally homologated GT was competitive. At 106cm high, fixed seats accommodated drivers up to 200cm by virtue of a sliding pedal box. With a complex De Dion rear suspension, the costly 1800GT sold in limited numbers. A 1500cc Cortina GT engined, live rear axle version was subsequently introduced. In 1967, Lawrence-tune, the business of racing driver and tuner, Chris Lawrence, boosted power by fitting a manifold of his own design, boring the block out to 1650cc and adding a progressive twin choke Solex carburettor. Power was increased from 85bhp to 120bhp necessitating bigger disc brakes. 32 were built. Possibly one of only 3 known surviving completely original Lawrence-tune 1650GT's, this car was extensively restored between 1990 and 1995 in the UK, retaining its interior, lights and slotted rear Perspex screen, Webasto sunroof, simple drop down side windows, wooden chassis and Lawrence-tune engine. Imported in 1999 by the current owner, wire wheels were fully refurbished and stove enamelled. Recently brakes have been rebuilt, including slave and master cylinders, new hydraulic hoses fitted and the radiator re-cored. Regularly serviced and driven demurely, we are advised by the owner this is a sound, reliable car, its patina and style reflective of an older restoration. A racer's delight, the still competitive wooden-chassis Marcos GT is a great example of small volume British automotive innovation of the 1960s. Copy of import approval and Lawrence-tune receipt included.
