  • Notes:
The Late Peter Brock's supremacy with Holden and as the most ebullient advocate for motorsport, led the Holden Dealer Team Special Vehicles Pty Ltd to build a limited number of sports Commodores based on the Group A and Group C race cars of the period. This was the VK Commodore, twice winner of the Bathurst 1000, in 1984 in Group C specification with Peter Brock and Larry Perkins and in 1986 in Group A specification with Allan Grice and Graeme Bailey. The SS Group A came into being as a homologation special, enabling a version of the Commodore to compete in Group A touring cars. Regulated by FISA, the international governing body for Group A, stipulated a minimum of 500 cars be built to a certain specification was in order to compete. These same regulations governed touring car series during the 1980s and 1990s internationally including the one-off 1987 World Touring Car Championship and highly significant races like the Bathurst 1000, Spa 24 Hours and the RAC Tourist Trophy. Production commenced in early 1985 but HDT was unable to complete the required number of 500 due to a lack of parts missing the 1 August eligibility deadline. They successfully pressed on with production and the VK SS Group A was ready for motor racing from 1 January 1986, 502 road cars then being available through Holden Dealer Team-affiliated Holden dealerships. The SS Group A model ran from 1985 until 1992. Four handbuilt models have since become highly collectible amongst Holden and performance enthusiasts, the VK LM 5000, SS Group 3, SS Group A and Calais Director sedans. HDT Special Vehicles Pty Ltd announced refinements to models of Calais Director and SS Commodore Group 3 cars in 1985 becoming the 1986 Limited Edition SS Group 3, uniquely called Holdens not HDT's or HSV's and painted in the unique Formula Blue to honour sponsor Mobil, attracting the nickname the Blue Meanie. Fifty were produced based on the normal Group A SS model, including the normal features of the SS Group 3 and the Group A engine. In Peter Brock's official letter to the first owner, a Mr. David Body, he said of the VK SS, "A great deal of time has been spent by HDT researching and developing various ideas, with an objective to produce a pleasant, easy-to-drive road car, which, in the hands of any competent driver, is safe, predictable and equal to any vehicle available in all aspect of motoring. We have endeavoured to retain traditional Holden qualities, such as the ability to negotiate rough roads, tow boats and caravans and to carry large loads of people and luggage without drama and with reliability and style". The VK SS has a more aggressive front grill, rear spoiler and larger front air dam over the standard VK Commodore. Changes included a double row timing chain, stronger L34 conrods, HDT high performance cross-flow cylinder heads with larger valves and a Rochester 4-barrel carburettor as developed for Group A racing. It runs a 4.9 litre engine rated at 196 kW (263 hp) at 5,200 rpm, with a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph). Transmission: M21 4-Speed manual with heavy duty clutch, limited slip diff and Group 3 HDT/Bilstein suspension. The car was assembled at Holden in Dandenong and modified at HDT Port Melbourne, Victoria. Build #3291 signifies innovation in Australia's automotive endeavour to contest International standards in motorsport. This absolutely original car in Formula Blue livery and smart matching blue and cream hounds tooth woollen upholstery is an icon of 1980's Australian motoring history. The familial features remain such as the Peter Brock Sound System with colour coded speaker covers, luxury cut pile Calais carpet, HDT grade door trims, map pockets, centre armrests, headrests and carpet on the rear parcel shelf. Body work includes LH/RH side skirts and door spats, Group 3 rear spoiler and Peter Brock decals. Period receipts indicate the additional purchase of 4 Brock aero wheels and tyres for $2,400. Tinted windows were added after delivery. The owner informs us that comprehensive servicing and maintenance has always been carried out and the car is in good running order. The car presents very well and along with a file of period receipts is the original owners handbook signed by Peter Brock. The chassis, HDT identification and compliance plates are detached but included within the sale.
