  • Notes:
The BMW 1600 forms part of The New Class (German: Neue Klasse) line of compact sedans and coupes from the 1962 1500 through to the 2002s in 1977. It cleverly combined the ultimate in a modern automobile: a functional, distinguished design impervious to short-term styling trends combined with a lively touring car and an easily managed and manoeuvrable town car. Initially four-door sedans and two-door coupes, the New Class line was broadened to two-door sports sedans with the addition of the 02 Series 1600 and 2002 in 1966. The New Class sporty capabilities caught the attention of auto enthusiasts and established BMW as an international brand. Precursors to the famed BMW 3 Series, the success of the two-door cemented the firm's future as an upper tier performance car maker. BMW commissioned an exhaustive series of crash tests during the development of the body shells, producing a car of the highest safety standards of the era. The car uses a carefully matched combination of front spring struts and rear semi trailing arms, rigorously tested in tough touring car competitions. The technology was the result of the latest engineering, physics research and experience gained from motor sport using a single overhead camshaft with inverted V valve layout in a hemispherical swirl action combustion chamber and a crankshaft, carried on 5 main bearings, resulting in an almost complete lack of engine vibration. This 1600 has remained in the ownership of one family since it was purchased new in Germany in 1970. It was accompanied by the owners aboard the Wilhelmsen Line Temeraire on 2nd October 1970 from Oslo to Adelaide. There are service receipts from John Ould Motors up until 1982 after which time the owner advises us it was comprehensively restored including the interior by Blackman's Seaford, bodywork repainted and engine reconditioned by Peninsula BMW. It has driven a mere 1500ks since. It is well presented in its original Chamonix white colour with blue factory vinyl upholstery.
