    Arthur Martin Beckett F.R.C.S. arrived in Sydney on 14 November 1838 in the barque Lord Eldon. Educated at London University, admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, he journeyed to the Colony on the advice of his eldest brother, then practising as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Dr a'Beckett was registered as a surgeon in New South Wales in January 1839. He was summoned by the Governor to a Seat on the Legislative Council and present at the inaugural meeting of the First Parliament of New South Wales in May 1856. He was a Trustee of the Australian Museum, one of the Commissioners of the Paris Exhibition of 1855, and a Trustee of Sydney Grammar School. The a'Beckett family had extensive land-holdings in New South Wales, particularly in the District of Coonamble.
