The Marvin Hurnall Collection

  • Auction House:
  • Reference:
    #MG077
  • Description:
    The Marvin Hurnall Collection

Marvin Edgar Hurnall was one of Australia's best-known antique dealers - hugely knowledgeable, witty, outspoken and influential, he was also a dedicated advocate for the industry and served as a member of the Australian Antique Dealers Association for over thirty years.

Marvin opened his first store in 1976 where he sold antiques and furniture initially but within a few years his focus had shifted toAustralian and Colonial furniture and Australian ceramics - unfashionable at the time, as most people were interested in European antiques and furniture - and he soon established himself as a leading authority in both areas.

He was also one of this country's most enthusiastic collectors, amassing a personal collection that came to represent the very best of Australian pottery - his passion - and he was solely responsible for a huge resurgence in popularity in the Murrembeena ceramicists John Perceval, Arthur and Merric Boyd and others, such as Maude O'Reilly, William Ricketts, Grace Seccombe and Marguerite Mahood.

This auction features over 400 ceramics from what is without doubt the most important collection of its kind in the country, with many museum quality and highly collectable pieces.
