• Notes:
  Hawthorn 18.13 (121) defeated North Melbourne 15.13 (103) in the Grand Final in front of 101,704 fans. The reverse was the outcome in the Reserves Grand Final, with North defeating Hawthorn. North Melbourne’s Malcolm Blight won the 1978 Brownlow Medal.
