Lot Description:Chinese Rhinoceros Horn Libation Cup, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), 17th Century
carved on the exterior with a reticulated pine tree handle with branches extending over the rim and onto the interior, the horn of rich chestnut-brown patina, fashioned in the form of a bark with scales and nodules
height 8.5 cm width 15 cm depth 10 cm -
Provenance:The Collection of a Gentleman, Sydney, acquired prior to 1970, probably in the 1960s

Notes:Accompanied by copy of ANSTO radiocarbon analysis report, 6 August 2019. The subject matter of the pine tree was much favoured by the Chinese scholar-literati. The rugged pine represents venerability and is a strong symbol of longevity
