  • Notes:
    Akan breasted drums were used in popular bands called Ompe, translated by J. H. K Nketia as ëwho doesn't like ití. Ompe performed at local festivals and funerals. The drums are decorated with relief figures representing proverbs, political statement, or satire. The breasts indicate the drum's role as ëmotherí of the band. Although ompe have been replaced by modern ensembles, a number are still active today
