Lot Description:3 Framed King Plates
NSW Red Cedar frame, the King Plates are unique in that one was for a man, one for a woman, & one for a man and a woman, the 3 place names (Wagala, Iluka and Ashby) are all in the Clarence River area of Northern NSW.
35x23cm (frame interior). -
Provenance:Purchased in Sydney 1985, in the Lawson's catalogue of 22/7/85 they were described as being issued between 1857 & 1861; Collection Dr John Raven, Perth.

Notes:Details of provenance are attached to the back of the frame. These state provenance as follows: Mrs G Campbell, Sydney; Lawsons, Sydney 22nd July, 1985, lot 316 (copy of the catalogue cover sheet & relevant page available). History of the plates as supplied (verbally) by Lawsons at the time of sale is that the great great great grandfather of the seller, a man by the name of McLauchlin, owned a sugar plantation on Harwood Island, near Grafton on the Clarence River. The place names on the plates are Clarence River locations. Family history is that the plates were sold in 1907 [possibly to W R Medway-Smith] then bequeathed by this person c.1972 to a descendent of the original owner.
