Notes:Text reads “Supplement to the Sketcher, Dec. 4th 1880. Drawn by G.R. Ashton.” The image depicts the race for for the world rowing championship held on the Thames from Putney to Mortlake, on 15th November 1880, between Australian rower Edward Trickett and the Canadian Edward Hanlan. Hanlan, in the foreground, won the race becoming the first Canadian to become a world champion.George Rossi Ashton worked for several newspapers including the Graphic (London), Illustrated London News, Bulletin, Australasian Sketcher, Illustrated Sydney News and Picturesque Atlas of Australasia. He worked with his brother Julian on the Illustrated Australian News in Melbourne on a number of assignments including the capture of the Ned Kelly gang at Glenrowan.
