  The eighth number of the first Melbourne newspaper, here reproduced in a scarce nineteenth-century facsimile edition. [Melbourne: 1869.] A typical advertisement reads “The undersigned begs to inform the Public that he keeps a Boat and two men in readiness for the Purpose of Crossing and recrossing Passengers between Williamstown and the opposite Beach. Parties from Melbourne are requested to raise a Smoke [signal] and the Boat will be at their Service as soon as practicable...”
