    J. C. Firth's Prize Medal, 32 mm, silver, by Anton Teutenberg (signed with 'AT'). Obverse: within a laurel wreath 'WON /BY / VOLUNTEER/ AUCKLAND /N.Z.
    and above J.C.FIRTH’S PRIZE; plain reverse engraved 'Arthur C. Firth'. Arthur Temple Clifton Firth, born c1867, a son of J C Firth, joined Colonial Sugar Company and at age of 20 moved to a branch in New South Wales, Australia. Josiah Clifton Firth (1826-1897), of Matamata Estate, was a strong supporter of military volunteer movement and provided various prizes, including medals for marksmanship, as the obverse of these medals suggest. It is understood that Firth presented medals to four of his sons, of which this is one. (See Dictionary of NZ Biography, Vol.1 1769-1869, Wellington 1990, and The Golden Age of Josiah Clifton Firth by Mona Gordon, 1963. [Prov. Miss Mona Gordon, Firth’s granddaughter, gave this medal to Lt-Col T C Wallace, of Cambridge, who gifted it to John Gibson.] RARE. Together with (2) another example of J. C. Firth's Prize Medal, 32 mm, silver, by Anton Teutenberg (signed with 'AT'). Obverse: within a laurel wreath 'WON /BY / VOLUNTEER/ AUCKLAND /N.Z. 1887, and above J.C.FIRTH’S PRIZE; plain reverse engraved 'Sam B. Firth'. Samuel Bateman Firth, born 1857 died 1892 a son of J C Firth.
