    stag horn grip, the blade with English maker's mark 'Wingfield Rowbotham'; with research material on Bassett including a biography and copies of his army and pension files (a lot)

Bassett was born in Springwater, New York on 9 October, 1840. He enlisted as a Private in 'D' Co. 188th New York Infantry on 10 September, 1864 and served at Petersburg, Baydton Rd, Dabney's Mill, Hatcher's Run and Five Forks. In December, 1864 Bassett was promoted to Cpl. and was mustered out on 1 July, 1865. He married in 1866 and fathered 10 children. He died in Illinois in 1924 aged 84.
