  Note: for buyers intending to export this lot outside of Australia, CITES regulations apply. Contact department for details. George M. Bassett was born in Springwater, New York on 9 October, 1840. He enlisted as a Private in 'D' Co. 188th New York Infantry on 10 September, 1864 and served at Petersburg, Baydton Rd, Dabney's Mill, Hatcher's Run and Five Forks. In December, 1864 Bassett was promoted to Cpl. and was mustered out on 1 July, 1865. He married in 1866 and fathered 10 children. He died in Illinois in 1924 aged 84.
