  • Provenance:
Acquired from the artist’s descendents. A collection of related works depicting Sydney and surrounding areas was acquired from the same source by the Mitchell Library in 2002.
  • Notes:
Evidently a contemporary copy of the lithograph by S.T.Gill, lithographed by Campbell & Fergusson. The Melbourne Exhibition of 1854 was the first major exhibition held in Port Phillip. The building would also host the Inter-Colonial Exhibition of 1861 and was demolished in the late 1860s. Edward Turner arrived in Melbourne in 1856, and after visiting Geelong, Portsea and the Forrest Creek diggings, travelled to Sydney. He worked there as an engraver. A fine colonial-era work showing Melbourne society at the height of the gold rush.
